Barbae
(Razor Bumps)
Pseudofolliculitis barbae, also called Razor bumps, may resemble
acne. They are raised purple and red bumps. Usually more prominent
after shaving.
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae is typically found in areas where shaving
occurs such as the side of the face, cheeks, and chin.
Typically Pseudofolliculitis Barbae
develops after shaving when strands of hair curl back on themselves
and grow into the skin. This can cause irritation and lead to pimples.
If left untreated "razor bumps" may cause scarring.
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae is most common among African-Americans
and people with tightly coiled hair. It tends to be more of a problem
for men than women since most men shave daily.
The Laser Clinic uses a revolutionary Alexandrite and Yag lasers
which emit a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to
the hair follicle where it is absorbed.
The laser energy is transformed into heat, which destroys the hair
follicle and leaves the surrounding
skin unaffected. The skin is further
protected during treatment by a Dynamic
Cooling Device™ (DCD) where
cryogen is sprayed onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing
patients with increased comfort.
After the hair is removed specific lasers will be used to treat
the affected areas of the skin to help smooth and heal the skin
naturally.
A recent study found that after 90
days, the average number of skin bumps in the treated sites was
significantly lower
compared with untreated sites, although some hair may re-grow after
6 to 12 months of treatment.
Individual results vary and depend
on number of treatments, desired result, and specific situation.
