| Melasma
Melasma is a very common disorder of cutaneous hyper-pigmentation
of all kinds and is the formation of irregular-shaped brown spots
or patches of varying shades on both sides of the face. Melasma
is a darkening of the facial skin, commonly affecting the apples
of the cheeks as well.
Melasma commonly affects the apples of the cheeks, the mid forehead,
jawline and areas around the mouth. It is especially found on the
forehead, nose, cheeks, upper lip, chin and on other sun-exposed
areas of the body. The distribution is usually symmetrical and can
be referred to as dermal or epidermal in type, with dermal melasma
being the most stubborn type to treat.
Overachieving melanocytes are to
blame. These pigment producing cells become stimulated to produce
extra unwanted melanin resulting in patchy discoloration. Triggers
include estrogen supplements, birth control pills, pregnancy, cellular
hyper-sensitivity to normal estrogen levels and sun exposure.
It is capable of spreading over time
if left untreated and worsens on sun exposure. There are many risks
and potential causative factors that precipitate and exacerbate
this condition.
